A Personal Journey of Transformation Through Determination and Practical Learning

Welcome to CMA Knowledge! I’m Mahadev S., a professional with over 18 years of experience in Taxation, Accounting, and Supply Chain Management. In this article, I’ll share my personal journey of how self-motivation and determination helped me overcome challenges and achieve my goals during my college years.

The Beginning: Facing Financial Challenges

Back in 2001, during my first year of B.Com, my family was navigating through significant financial difficulties. Like many students from middle-class families, I felt a strong responsibility to contribute financially while continuing my education. This wasn’t just about earning pocket money—it was about sharing the burden with my family during tough times.

After college hours, I had substantial free time that I wanted to utilize productively. After discussions with friends and family, I received a promising lead about a part-time job opportunity at a small workshop owned by my friend’s cousin.

The Power of Taking Initiative

When faced with challenges, the most powerful step you can take is to actively seek solutions. Rather than waiting for opportunities to come to you, create them through networking, research, and courage to ask for what you need.

The Interview: First Steps into the Working World

The next day, I visited the workshop and met the owner. He conducted a straightforward interview, asking about my educational background, family situation, and motivations for seeking employment while still in college. I answered honestly, explaining my circumstances and desire to support my family.

He appreciated my transparency and offered me a part-time position with clear expectations: regular attendance and a trial period to evaluate my performance and suitability for the role. This was my first lesson in professional accountability—showing up consistently and proving my worth.

“Opportunities don’t happen. You create them through preparation, persistence, and the courage to step outside your comfort zone.”

The Workshop Experience: Adapting to a New Environment

My first day at the workshop introduced me to an environment far different from the classroom. The space was filled with the constant hum of machinery, the distinct smell of metal and oil, and an atmosphere that was initially intimidating. The workshop housed numerous lathe machines, and my initial responsibility was straightforward but precise: cutting aluminum bars into small pieces measuring between 105-115mm.

For the first few days, the work seemed manageable. I marked the bars and cut them to the specified length, gradually building my speed and accuracy. But the real challenge wasn’t just the work itself—it was adapting to an environment completely foreign to my academic background.

The Hectic Schedule: Juggling Multiple Responsibilities

Amidst my college and work commitments, my father encouraged me to pursue a one-year computer diploma at an affordable institute recommended by his friend. He understood that additional skills would enhance my future prospects, despite our current financial constraints.

This decision transformed my already busy schedule into an intensely packed routine:

TimeActivity
7:00 AM – 11:00 AMCollege Classes
12:00 PM – 5:00 PMWork at Workshop
5:00 PM – 7:00 PMComputer Classes
8:00 PM – 11:00 PMReturn to Workshop

Additionally, I had qualified for the National Cadet Corps (NCC) three-year army training after passing a rigorous selection test. The NCC physical training sessions were held every Sunday from 7 am to 11 am, adding another commitment to my already full schedule.

The Turning Point: From Basic Tasks to Skill Development

After about a month and a half at the workshop, the owner noticed my consistent attitude and willingness to learn. He offered to train me in operating the lathe machines—a significant step up from my initial responsibilities.

Due to my eagerness to learn and refusal to give up, I mastered the basic machine operations within a week. The work involved multiple operations, requiring me to transition from one machine to another for each subsequent step. Any mistakes incurred penalties due to the high cost of materials, teaching me the importance of precision and attention to detail.

The Growth Mindset in Action

When presented with opportunities to learn new skills, embrace them wholeheartedly. Each new competency not only enhances your current capabilities but opens doors to future possibilities you can’t yet foresee.

The Academic Connection: Theory Meets Practice

As a first-year commerce student, I was studying Mathematics and Costing. The subject of Costing resonated deeply with my working experience at the workshop. While my teacher explained theoretical concepts in class, I could visualize the entire costing process based on my practical involvement at the workshop.

Concepts such as costing elements, material operations, and labor overheads became clearer and more meaningful because I had firsthand experience with these elements in a real-world setting. This connection between theory and practice not only helped me excel academically but also gave me a deeper understanding that would benefit me throughout my career.

“Education is not just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about connecting that knowledge to real-world applications that create value and understanding.”

Key Lessons in Self-Motivation

Looking back at this transformative period in my life, several principles of self-motivation became clear:

1. Find Your “Why”

My motivation wasn’t abstract—it was rooted in the tangible need to support my family. This powerful “why” fueled my determination during challenging moments. When your motivation connects to something personally meaningful, you tap into reserves of energy and persistence you didn’t know you had.

2. Embrace Discomfort as Growth

The workshop environment was initially uncomfortable—loud, unfamiliar, and physically demanding. Yet, this discomfort became the catalyst for my growth. When we step outside our comfort zones, we expand our capabilities and develop resilience that serves us in all areas of life.

3. See Connections Everywhere

My ability to connect my work experience with academic concepts transformed my learning process. When we actively look for connections between different areas of our lives, we create a web of understanding that strengthens our knowledge and makes it more applicable.

4. Value the Process, Not Just the Outcome

While earning money was important, the skills, discipline, and work ethic I developed during this time proved far more valuable in the long run. When we focus on the quality of our efforts rather than just the results, we build foundations for sustained success.

Key Takeaways for Your Journey

  • Practical experience enhances theoretical learning and creates lasting understanding
  • During your most energetic years, pursue diverse experiences that build skills and character
  • The ability to learn while earning provides both immediate and long-term benefits
  • Self-motivation grows from having clear, meaningful goals
  • Challenges and discomfort are often disguised opportunities for growth
  • Connecting different areas of your life creates a more integrated, purposeful existence

Applying These Principles to CMA Studies

For CMA students struggling with complex concepts, I’ve observed that adopting a practical-based study approach is crucial for comprehensive understanding and future success. Here’s how you can apply the lessons from my journey to your CMA preparation:

Connect Concepts to Real-World Scenarios

When studying theoretical concepts, actively look for real-world applications. How would this cost accounting principle apply in a manufacturing setting? How would this taxation concept affect a small business? Creating these mental bridges makes abstract ideas concrete and memorable.

Develop a Growth Mindset

View challenges in your studies not as obstacles but as opportunities to strengthen your understanding. Each difficult concept you master builds your capability and confidence for the next challenge.

Create a Structured but Flexible Schedule

Like my packed schedule during college, design a study routine that maximizes your productive hours while allowing for breaks and unexpected interruptions. Consistency in your study habits creates momentum that carries you through difficult periods.

Find Your Personal Motivation

Connect your CMA studies to your larger life goals. Whether it’s career advancement, financial stability, or personal achievement, keeping your “why” at the forefront will sustain your motivation during challenging study sessions.
